About Me
What Is Classical Yoga For Beginners?
I wanted to clear up some misconceptions about what I do as a Classical Yoga Instructor for Beginners.
The postures we learned in my teacher's training program, referred to as Hatha Yoga, through George Brown involved over 60 classical yoga poses, which are thousands of years old, and 2 postures from the 20th century. As your Classical Hatha Yoga instructor, I will not ask you to do headstands, handstands, or bend yourself into pretzels. Not only is this completely unnecessary, but such poses are not included in the 60 asanas of Classical Yoga.
What is the aim of yoga? Ultimately, it is to help build awareness. This can be achieved through simple to understand yet challenging to do poses that are also very effective in preventing and improving many health conditions. In the poses I teach there are always ways to improve breathing techniques or ranges of motion. I will never force you to go deeper into a pose. I want to encourage you to listen to your own body rather than rely on assists or adjustments.
I started yoga later in life myself, and yet experienced many benefits in doing yoga over many months of patient, persistent practice. When I first began yoga I could not even sit in a simple Sukhasana pose (modified version of the Lotus pose) for more than a few minutes. Now Sukhasana is my preferred method of meditation.
When I meet with you for the first time I will focus on your history, your current needs, and goals. I will then teach you a short series of easy poses lasting anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. I will go over each pose carefully including which bones, muscles, joints and organs are involved, and proper breathing techniques. I will build on these poses in the subsequent weeks.
Classical yoga is not a weight loss program, per se. Don't expect to get really hot and sweaty. If you do, then this yoga is not meant for you. I do suggest you do a bit of walking or cardio before you begin, to warm up those muscles, making it easier to stretch. Do expect that the Classical Hatha yoga poses will help you tremendously with circulation, even though the movements are slower.
It is never too late to start. I encourage you to get started now on your journey to better health. ~Namaste~
